School System Fails to Deal with Bullying – Again

Wednesday, the producer of the #1 radio show here in Southern California sent me an e-mail, letting me know about another enraging story about bullying.

A promising young sophomore shot and killed himself – in the middle of the street, in broad daylight – because he and his family had repeatedly gone to his school counselors and administrators, reporting that he was being bullied and begging for help.

According to the story, he was told on more than one occasion to, "keep your head down and ignore it".

A leading expert was asked why bullying is becoming such an epidemic in the schools and her reply was that while schools are well prepared to get kids ready to take tests, they are woefully inadequate and ill prepared to help kids with bullying.

The parents of this child are considering a $3 million dollar action against the school district for their lack of action in dealing with the situation.  The parents are asking that all the proceeds be donated to a home for abused children.

What infuriates me about this is the repeating of the same mistakes by parents and children, and the outright failure of the school system.

How many kids have to kill themselves, how many kids have to get emotional scars, how many parents have to lose the most precious gift they will ever get before SOMEBODY gets pissed off enough to do something about it?

I AM pissed off about it – and that's why I will continue to spread the message to parents and kids:  Take Your Power Back.

STOP relying on outside forces, outsides entities, the government, school systems, authority figures or anything else to help you and your child.

We want to teach our children to STAND UP for themselves; to see themselves as worthy of being treated in a manner that is respectful.  We want to teach our children that the ONLY thing that matters is that they love themselves and that their parents love them.

We want to teach our children to be Bully Proof – we want them emotionally tough; willing to stand alone and feel good about it.

And here is the part that makes everyone squeamish, especially the politically correct – we want to teach our children that it is perfectly okay to kick ass when the situation calls for it.

While we don't want our children to be bullies themselves, we want our kids to be able to stand up for themselves and make a statement to whomever may have targeted them as a victim.

When kids and adults feel as if they are a victim or their destiny is not in their hands, then they get depressed and feel as if they are powerless.  They feel trapped, and that is what leads to the depression…or worse.

I know.  I know what it is like to skip school because you don't want to get picked on or beat up.

I know what it is like as an adult to feel trapped in a professional relationship that is abusive, yet you don't see any way out because you feel as if you need your job and have to put up with your boss.

I know what it is like to feel trapped in your profession, feeling as if there is no way out; feeling so depressed that you can't eat and you can't get out of bed in the morning.

It sucks.  It is the worse feeling in the world.

I also know that it is temporary.  You can change it as soon as you take your power back, get mad and start to stand up for yourself.

The moment you mentally take control, focus on what you want and then start moving toward it, regardless of who's feelings get hurt, who thinks you are crazy, who gets mad or anything else – that is when the depression and everything else goes away.

Your situation may not change immediately, but pretty soon, as long as you stay focused, you will be amazed at what happens.

Take your power back.  Stop relying on anything outside of yourself to come to the rescue or resolve conflicts.  Stand up for yourself and start kicking azz.

You'll feel better – I promise.

To your best,

Sensei Huff
