How Master Po Can Help You Defeat a Bully
Back in the 70's, there was a television show about an American who found his way to a temple in China, where he was accepted as a student, given the name "Grasshopper" and was trained as a martial artist.
In one scene from the show, his Master was teaching him a martial arts principle and when he began to struggle, the Master said, "Focus, Grasshopper."
Focus is one of the guiding principles in the martial arts…but also in every area of your life. I know, because I am Captain Hyperman.
I am a Scorpio in the Western astrology charts, so I am very intense. I'm also a Monkey in the Eastern astrology – by the way, whether you are into this sort of thing or not, the Eastern astrology charts, originating in China, are some of the most accurate descriptions of personalities when it comes to birth sign that you owe it to yourself to check it out – which means I am curious and like to get into everything.
Of course, I am bored about ten seconds later. As a child, I would have been medicated to the point of being a zombie. I have the attention span of a flea on crack. My memory is brilliant; it's just short.
This means that focusing and being consistent is what I have to practice most or my life is a disaster.
I used to buy into the multi-tasking thing; "I'm the type of person that has to do ten things at once or I don't feel right, blah, blah, blah…"
While I do find that I focus better under pressure, I also find that my stress levels go up in proportion to my screw-ups when I leave things to the last minute and then cram to get it all done.
When I am doing ten things at once, I might feel better, but it doesn't mean that I am giving my full attention to the task at hand, getting it one hundred percent complete and then moving to the next thing.
When it comes to your work, your relationships, your muney, whatever…focus can save you.
What is more effective at work – trying to answer the phone, return e-mail and crunch numbers for the mutli-millyun dollah presentation, or shutting the door and getting that presentation done.
How about with your current flame. Do you think it is a big hit when you two are on a date and you are checking your iPhone, answering e-mail, texting and surfing the net. How would you feel if they did that to you…
What about that difficult person at work or bully picking on your kid? Do you ignore it and try to focus elsewhere, or do you stop what you are doing, address it when it comes up and deal with it, once and for all?
No one can tell you what to do or how to live your life. You wear big girl or big boy panties now, so what you do and how you do it is one hundred percent your responsibility.
If you want to become more effective, get more done, have better relationships and squash the problems and challenges in your life easily and effortlessly, do as Master Po instructed…
Focus, Grasshopper.
Take back your power,
Sensei Harrison Huff
